Custom Magnetic Closure Boxes — Collapsible Rigid Packaging for DTC
Most rigid gift boxes ship fully assembled. A magnetic closure box is the exception — it is engineered to ship flat, fold into shape at the warehouse, and snap shut with hidden magnets. The result is a premium unboxing experience with a freight cost much closer to a folding carton.

Why magnetic boxes convert for DTC
Direct-to-consumer brands compete on three numbers: cost of goods, freight cost, and the unboxing moment. A traditional rigid setup box wins the unboxing moment and loses the freight comparison. A folding carton wins freight and loses the unboxing moment. A collapsible magnetic box is the third path: it ships at roughly the volume of a folding carton, then opens and feels like a rigid box at the customer's door.
How a collapsible rigid box is built
A magnetic closure box uses the same materials as a rigid box — greyboard core, 157 gsm art paper or specialty wrap, hand-finished edges — but adds two pieces of engineering:
- Pre-creased greyboard that folds along scored lines into the box shape.
- Hidden magnets embedded in the top flap and the front body of the box, so the lid snaps shut with no visible hardware.
Optional but common in premium builds:
- A ribbon pull tab on the front, so the lid opens with a tug instead of fingers on the edge.
- A paperboard or EVA foam insert inside to hold the product in place during shipping.

Sizing and capacity
Magnetic boxes are practical for any product that is light to mid-weight and fits inside a roughly shoe-box-sized envelope. Common sizes we build:
| Use | Outer (L × W × H) |
|---|---|
| Single candle | 90 × 90 × 100 mm |
| Skincare set (3–5 jars) | 230 × 110 × 70 mm |
| Subscription kit | 280 × 200 × 80 mm |
| Apparel folded | 350 × 280 × 80 mm |
| Wine single bottle | 340 × 95 × 95 mm |
For larger items (4–6 wine bottles, beauty fridge-size, multi-product crates) a rigid lift-off lid box or shipping crate is usually more cost-effective than a magnetic closure format.
Freight savings
A standard rigid gift box, fully assembled, takes up roughly 4–6× the cube of a flat-packed magnetic box of the same size. For a brand shipping 5,000 subscription kits internationally, that volume difference is the difference between LCL consolidation and air freight. Collapsible magnetic boxes are the standard recommendation for any DTC brand that needs to ship rigid boxes internationally.
Finishes that pair well

- Matte black wrap + gold foil — works for tech accessories and cosmetics.
- Specialty paper (linen, pearl, vintage) — for jewelry, candles and luxury gifting.
- Spot UV gloss on logo against a matte background.
