Rigid Boxes: A Buyer's Guide to Setup, Collapsible and Magnetic Styles
When a product needs to feel premium before it is even opened, brands reach for rigid boxes. Unlike folding cartons that ship flat on a single layer of board, a rigid box is built on a thick greyboard core wrapped in printed art paper or specialty paper — giving it sharp corners, real weight, and a high-end unboxing moment.

Why brands choose rigid boxes over folding cartons
A folding carton is made from one sheet of paperboard that arrives flat and is folded into shape at your warehouse. It is light, cheap, and ships in volume. A rigid box takes the opposite bet: it is assembled at the factory, ships as a finished box, and costs more per unit — but it delivers a tactile, "this is worth something" impression the moment a customer picks it up. For gift sets, subscription boxes that live on a shelf, and retail display, that impression is often what justifies the upgrade.
What actually makes a box "rigid"?
The core is greyboard, typically 1000–1500 gsm. The board is cut, grooved and folded into shape, then covered by hand with 157 gsm C2S art paper or a specialty wrap. That hand-assembly step is what gives rigid boxes their clean edges and heft. Most rigid boxes arrive fully assembled, not flat — except for the collapsible magnetic style, which is engineered to fold flat and pop into shape at your warehouse.
The five rigid box styles you should know
1. Lift-off / detachable lid box

The classic "setup box": a separate lid sits on a base. Used for corporate gifts, apparel and tech accessories.
2. Magnetic closure box (collapsible)

A rigid box with hidden magnets that snap shut. The only rigid style that can ship flat and be re-assembled at the warehouse, which is why it is the format of choice for direct-to-consumer brands optimizing shipping cost.
3. Drawer / matchbox box

An outer sleeve plus an inner tray that slides out. Popular for jewelry, watches and premium cosmetics. Can be combined with ribbon pull, EVA foam insert, or a built-in card slot.
4. Shoulder / neck box

A base with a raised platform the lid sits over, creating a visible step. Common for wine, spirits and luxury candles. The "neck" is the raised inner part; the "shoulder" is the upper edge of the base where the lid rests.
5. Hinged lid box

The lid attaches to the base along one edge, like a book. Good for keepsakes, photo boxes, candles and any product meant to be re-opened many times.

Wrap options: art paper vs specialty paper
- C2S art paper (157 gsm) — the standard wrap. Supports full CMYK printing at low cost; matte or gloss lamination.
- Specialty paper — textured, pearlized, soft-touch, or patterned. Usually stock-printed (no custom print) but sells the "luxury" feel.
- Faux leather / PU wrap — stitched edges, used for jewelry boxes and high-end spirits. Add a custom debossed logo.
- Greyboard-only (kraft liner) — the uncoated look. Trendy for organic, eco-positioned brands.
Finishing that lifts a rigid box
- Hot foil stamping — gold, silver, copper or holographic foil logos.
- Spot UV — glossy clear coat on a logo or pattern against a matte background.
- Embossing / debossing — raised or pressed logos on the wrap.
- Soft-touch lamination — velvety feel; pairs well with hot foil.
