A public relations kit only gets one first impression. Once the courier delivers the box, the brand is judged by the weight, the snap of the lid, and how cleanly the products sit inside. A custom rigid PR kit box makes that moment repeatable across every influencer, journalist and buyer you ship to. This guide covers the box styles, materials and inserts we use most often for PR mailers, plus the MOQ and pricing mechanics behind a 100-piece run.

Why PR kits call for a rigid box
A folding carton survives one round of courier handling; a PR kit is opened, photographed and often re-shipped or stored. A rigid box uses 1000 to 1500 gsm greyboard wrapped in printed art paper or specialty stock, which gives it the weight, sharp corners and reusability that a PR unboxing needs. The same box then becomes storage at the recipient desk, a quiet second round of brand exposure that a folding carton cannot earn.
Three box styles that work for PR kits
| Style | Structure | Best for | Ships flat? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collapsible magnetic | Greyboard panels hinged with hidden magnets; assembles in about 10 seconds | Monthly influencer drops, DTC seeding | Yes, fits roughly five times more units per outbound shipment |
| Setup box (lid-off) | Fully assembled, glued corners | Hero PR drops, award kits, media press kits | No, ships assembled |
| Drawer box | Slide-out inner tray with outer sleeve | Kit with three to six small items such as sample vials, brochures, cards | No, ships assembled |
Most of the PR runs we ship split between the collapsible magnetic (about sixty percent) and the setup box (about thirty percent). The drawer option comes in when the kit has more than four small items that need their own cavity.
Materials and finish that read premium
PR unboxing rewards restraint: a single foil-stamped logo on a matte paper wrap outperforms a full-coverage print on most kits. We typically wrap the greyboard in 157 gsm coated art paper, art paper laminated to soft-touch matte, or a specialty stock such as recycled kraft for eco-leaning brands. Common finishes are gold or silver foil for the logo, spot UV on a key pattern, and a paper or satin ribbon pull. Inside print is optional and works best on collapsible magnetic boxes.
Inserts that hold the products in place
Inserts do the work the box cannot. For a typical PR kit we use one of three: a die-cut EVA foam cavity to product silhouette, a paperboard tray with die-cut wells, or a flocked or paper-wrapped mould for a single hero object. For glass vials, fragrance samples or ceramic pieces, EVA with a soft top layer is the safest. For paper goods such as brochures, lookbooks and sample cards, a paperboard tray is enough.
MOQ, lead time and what you get
All PR box styles start at MOQ 100 pieces. Lead time is 7 to 12 working days after artwork approval. We supply a free dieline with the quote and a free plain-white physical sample for structure check (logo-printed samples are paid). Pricing scales at 100 / 500 / 1000 / 5000 tiers; the per-unit drop between 100 and 500 is the largest, so seeding budgets under 500 pieces usually benefit from running once instead of topping up later.
Common pitfalls before you order
Two pitfalls cost PR clients the most time. The first is artwork at the wrong resolution: logo files below 300 dpi look soft under foil. The second is shipping a collapsible magnetic box fully assembled; it must ship flat and snap into shape at your warehouse to earn the freight savings. We will flag both during dieline review so they are fixed before press.
