"Biodegradable shipping packaging" gets thrown around a lot, often by boxes that are mostly plastic. Let's be precise, because the difference matters for what actually happens to your package after delivery.
What "biodegradable" means for paper
Plain paper and corrugated board are genuinely biodegradable — given the right conditions (soil, compost, or even a landfill over time), the cellulose fibers break down. Uncoated kraft corrugated and kraft folding cartons are about as good as it gets: mono-material, no plastic, no metal. They break down far faster than any plastic mailer.
What slows it down (and what to avoid)
- Plastic lamination. A glossy film-laminated carton is not biodegradable in any practical sense. The film is PET or PP. Skip lamination; use a water-based coating if you need scuff resistance.
- Plastic windows. A "window" patch is usually PET. If you need to show the product, use a die-cut opening or a paper-backed window, not a clear plastic film.
- Mixed materials. A box with glued-in foam, bubble, or metal corners is hard to compost and often not curbside recyclable either.
- UV varnish in thick layers. Light, water-based coatings are fine; heavy solvent UV builds a plastic-like film.

Biodegradable is not the same as compostable
This is the part most suppliers blur. Biodegradable just means it breaks down eventually — a vague claim with no standard. Compostable (especially "home compostable") requires third-party certification (TÜV OK Compost HOME, EN 13432, ASTM D6400). Plain kraft paper is biodegradable but usually not certified compostable. Don't let a printer relabel one as the other. If you want to say "compostable," ask for the certificate number.
A practical, honest setup
For most small brands shipping in the US, Canada, UK, or Australia, the lowest-risk eco claim is: recyclable, plastic-free, mono-material paper packaging. That is defensible and true for a plain kraft mailer. Pair it with paper tape (not plastic tape) and you have a box a customer can drop in the paper bin.
