What a dieline actually is

A dieline is the flat, unfolded template of a box: it shows every cut, every score (fold) line, every glue tab, and any window or insert pocket. Think of it as the engineering drawing behind the package. Artwork is what you see; the dieline is what makes the box physically possible. Get the dieline wrong and no amount of beautiful printing fixes it.

Why structure beats artwork most of the time

A gorgeous design printed on the wrong structure produces misaligned folds, text that runs awkwardly across a crease, and glue flaps that do not meet. The common rookie error is treating the box PDF like a poster and ignoring where the carton actually folds. The structure has to come first.

  • Art sits on a fold line, so type or a logo splits across a crease.
  • Bleed missing at the trim edge leaves a white sliver after cutting.
  • A glue tab that is too short fails in transit and the seam opens.
  • Mis-sized insert pockets let the product rattle or shift.

How dielines differ by box type

  • Rigid box — greyboard (typically 1000-1500 gsm) mounted with 157 gsm C2S art paper or specialty paper. It ships assembled, so the dieline is mostly for the wrapped shell and any insert trays, not a folding shell you build.
  • Collapsible magnetic box — the same rigid greyboard-and-art-paper construction, but the dieline adds hinge folds and magnet pockets so the box folds flat for shipping. It is the only rigid type that flat-ships.
  • Folding carton — SBS white card, kraft, or light corrugated. It ships flat and uses the classic one-piece dieline that folds into shape by hand or machine.
  • Corrugated shipper — E, B, or F flute wrapped with white card, kraft, or specialty paper; the dieline must account for board thickness at the seams.

The rookie mistake: art first, structure second

Many teams design the artwork, then ask a factory to "make a box fit this." The better order is to lock the dieline first, confirm the panel sizes, and only then pour the artwork into the panels. That single change saves most reprints and the awkward "why is my logo on a fold?" moment.

Do you need a designer, or can you use a template?

That is fast and low-friction — the downside is you usually cannot take that file to another factory, and customization stays limited to what their editor allows. What to check on your dieline before print

Before anything goes on press, walk through this short list with your factory:

  • Bleed of about 3 mm outside the trim, with a safe zone inside for text.
  • Fonts outlined and artwork at 300 dpi.
  • Dieline on its own layer, set not to print.
  • Cut lines and score (fold) lines clearly distinguished.
  • Product dimensions confirmed against any insert or pocket.

Lead time and MOQ reality
