Why a Sample Beats a Guess
Ordering packaging is a commitment. A custom box looks different in a 3D render than it does in your hand - the paper weight, the magnet strength, the way a lid closes. That is why most buyers ask for a sample before locking in a 1,000-piece run. A physical sample turns a vague idea into something you can test, photograph, and ship a product inside.
Two Kinds of Samples: Blank Mock-up vs Printed Pre-production
There are really two stages, and they answer different questions.
A white blank mock-up (sometimes called a structural dummy) is an unprinted box made from the final material and structure. No artwork, no logo. Its job is to confirm size, fit, and build quality. If your product rattles inside or the box will not close, you learn that here - cheaply, before any printing happens.
A printed pre-production sample is the real thing: correct paper, print, coating, and finish. This is what you approve before mass production. It is the reference standard the factory matches the full order against.
What to Check on a Sample
- Fit: Does the product sit snug without force? Drop-test it once.
- Structure: Do magnets, tucks, and hinges feel right? A rigid box ships assembled; a folding carton ships flat and must erect cleanly.
- Print: Check color against your Pantone or approved digital proof. Look for registration, smudges, and coating evenness.
- Finish: Foil, emboss, and soft-touch laminate read differently on paper than on screen.
- Weight: A heavy rigid box costs more to ship per unit. Confirm it is worth it.
The Timeline: From Inquiry to Physical Box
A typical path looks like this:
- Day 0 - Inquiry: You send product dimensions and a rough idea. We propose a structure and material.
- Day 1-2 - Dieline: We send a free dieline (structure file) so your designer can lay out artwork at the exact size.
- Day 3-5 - Proof: Digital artwork proof for color and layout approval.
- Day 5-9 - Sample production: The physical sample is made, usually 7-12 working days after artwork approval for the full run, but a sample can often be turned faster.
- Day 10 - Review: You test the sample and either approve or request changes.
