Candles look simple, but they are one of the harder things to ship. A typical jar candle weighs 300-600 g, sits in thin glass, and the wax can crack if the box takes a corner hit. Multiply that by a few hundred units in a master carton, and a weak box turns into a pile of broken glass and angry reviews.
Why candles are a packaging headache
The fix is rarely "use a thicker box everywhere." It is matching the structure to the candle's weight, shape, and how far it travels. A shelf-ready gift candle and a mail-order single jar need different answers, and getting the match wrong is what causes the damage.
Rigid boxes for the premium shelf
If your candle is a gift or sits in a boutique, a rigid box reads as premium. At our Guangzhou workshop a rigid candle box is built from greyboard (1,000-1,500 gsm) wrapped with 157 gsm C2S art paper or a specialty paper, then assembled by hand. That greyboard core is what gives the box its weight and resist-the-squeeze feel.
One trade-off to plan for: a rigid box ships assembled, so freight is heavier than a flat carton of the same footprint. For a premium candle where the unboxing is part of the product, that is usually worth it. If you want the same rigid look but flatter freight, a collapsible magnetic box gives you greyboard-plus-art-paper construction that folds flat for shipping and pops up on the shelf - it is the only rigid type that ships flat.
Inserts that stop the slide
A candle rolling inside its box is the most common failure we see. The answer is an insert that holds the jar in place: EVA foam, molded pulp, or a simple paper platform with a die-cut cavity. For a single jar, a paper insert with a snug hole is light, cheap, and fully recyclable.
Match the insert to the glass. A wide tumbler candle needs a wider cavity than a slim pillar. Get this wrong and the jar still shifts; get it right and you can drop the master carton a few times in a demo and the candle stays put.
Flat-ship options and which box to choose
Selling direct to customers by post? A folding carton (SBS white card or kraft) or a corrugated mailer (E, B, or F flute wrapped with white card, kraft, or specialty paper) ships flat and costs far less to freight than an assembled rigid box. For a single jar, an E-flute mailer with a paper insert is often the sweet spot: protective enough, light, and printable outside for branding.

Honest caveat: flat-ship rigid (the collapsible magnetic type) still needs someone to pop it open and the magnets add a little cost. For pure freight savings on a plain candle, the folding carton or corrugated mailer wins.
