What Is a Camera Packaging Box?
A camera pack is an awkward engineering problem: the device is heavy, irregularly shaped, has protruding optics, and ships with a set of loose accessories that all need to be immobilised. Unlike a flat laptop or a small earbud case, a camera body concentrates weight in one lobe and puts a lens barrel where the box wants to be flat.
The protruding element is what governs the design. A lens mount or a fixed barrel means the cradle has to support the body around the protrusion rather than under it, and any drop energy must be routed away from the mount, which is usually the most expensive part to damage. This is why camera packs almost always use moulded pulp or profiled foam rather than a flat tray.
The second issue is accessory count. A typical camera ships with a battery, charger, strap, body cap, cable and manual - six items that will migrate and scratch the body if they share a compartment. A two-level build with the body suspended above and the accessories seated below is the standard answer.

Sustainability notes
- Moulded pulp instead of EVA foam or vac-formed PET is the single largest sustainability improvement available in electronics packaging, and it usually performs as well in drop tests.
- The greyboard core of a rigid electronics box is already 80-100% recycled fibre.
- Soy-based inks and water-based glue throughout; no solvent adhesives anywhere in the build.
- A paper pull-tab or a fibre-based ribbon replaces the plastic film tab used on most premium unboxing structures.
- Right-sizing the cavity to the device reduces both board and void fill, and lowers dimensional-weight freight at the same time.

The cradle geometry does the work here - the shell is comparatively straightforward.

Send the actual body with the lens or cap fitted as it will ship. Camera bodies have complex surfaces and a cradle cut from a drawing rarely supports the load in the same places as one cut from the real object.

Why does a camera need a moulded pulp cradle rather than a flat tray?
Because a camera body concentrates weight in one lobe and has a protruding lens mount. A flat tray lets the body rock and routes drop energy straight into the mount, which is the most expensive part to damage. A pulp cradle supports the body around the protrusion and carries the load away from the optics.
How do you stop accessories scratching the camera body?
By putting them on a separate level. A camera typically ships with six loose items - battery, charger, strap, cap, cable, manual - and any of them sharing a compartment with the body will migrate and mark it. The standard build suspends the body above and seats the accessories in individual cavities below.
Do you need the actual camera to make the insert?
Yes, and fitted with the lens or body cap exactly as it will ship. Camera bodies have complex compound surfaces, and a cradle cut from CAD data rarely bears the load in the same places as one cut from the physical object. It is the difference between a cradle that supports and one that merely contains.
What about shipping lithium batteries inside the pack?
A UN3481 marking panel goes on the outer carton and we lay it into the dieline. The declaration, airline documentation and any state-of-charge limits are the shipper responsibility, but we make sure the marking has correctly sized, unobstructed space on the box.
Is moulded pulp worth the tooling cost at low volume?
