What Is a Custom Gift Box?
A custom gift box is a box built to a specific product and a specific brand rather than bought from a stock catalogue. In practice that covers three quite different builds - a rigid set-up box, a folding gift carton and a corrugated gift mailer - and the first useful step in any gift packaging project is deciding which of the three you are actually buying.
Rigid is greyboard wrapped in printed paper, arrives assembled, feels substantial, costs the most and ships as air. Folding is printed on a single 300-400gsm board, ships flat and is erected by you, which is the economical route at volume. Corrugated is the only one of the three that survives a courier network on its own. Comparing quotes across these three builds without naming which one you want is the most common reason gift box pricing looks inconsistent.
The second decision is where the box is opened. If it is handed over in person or filmed for an unboxing, spend the budget on the closure and the interior. Whichever build you choose, print the inside face. It is the surface the recipient looks at longest, it costs comparatively little, and it is the single most reliable way to make a mid-priced box feel considered.
Material Specification
Material follows the build, and mixing them up is where quotes go wrong. A rigid box is greyboard plus a wrap; a folding gift carton is a single printed board; a gift mailer is corrugated. None of the three is "just cardboard".

- The greyboard core is 80-100% recycled fibre, so the heaviest component of a rigid box is already a recycled material.
- Water-based glue keeps the finished box in the paper recycling stream, provided the wrap paper is not film-laminated.
- A die-cut paperboard or moulded pulp insert replaces EVA foam and keeps the pack mono-material. Velvet and flock look richer but end the recyclability claim.
- Rigid boxes are shipped assembled, so freight volume is the real footprint issue. A collapsible magnetic build cuts shipping volume by roughly 60-70%.
- Aqueous varnish or an uncoated specialty wrap is the recyclable alternative to soft-touch film lamination.

Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.
