What Is a Perfume Packaging Box?
A perfume box is the most finish-driven pack in the whole beauty category. The fragrance itself cannot be shown, sampled or explained on shelf, so the box carries almost the entire brand message - and it also has to protect a heavy glass bottle with a fragile atomiser through international air freight.
Two very different builds dominate. A folding carton on 350-400gsm with a paperboard cradle covers mass and mid-market fragrance. Prestige and niche fragrance moves to a rigid lid-and-base or book-style box on 1.5-2mm greyboard, because the weight and the sound of the lid closing are part of what the customer is paying for.
The protection problem is specific: a 50-100ml glass flacon weighs 200-400g filled and concentrates all of it on a small base. Without a fitment the bottle moves, and glass that shifts inside a box chips at the shoulder and can shear the atomiser stem. Every perfume pack we build is specified with a cradle - paperboard, moulded pulp, EVA or flocked tray.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Fragrance packaging is graded by price position more clearly than any other category.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Mass and mid-market EDT | 400gsm SBS straight tuck end carton with a die-cut paperboard cradle, foil logo, cellophane overwrap. |
| Prestige and niche EDP | Rigid lid and base on 2mm greyboard, wrapped in specialty paper, with a flocked or EVA cradle sized to the flacon. |
| Travel and discovery sets | Compartmented tray holding 3-5 vials of 5-10ml, inside a sleeve or a small rigid box. |
| Refill bottles | Slim economical carton, deliberately plainer than the first-purchase pack, supporting a refill programme. |
| Gift sets with body products | Larger rigid box or a lid and base rigid box holding fragrance plus lotion or shower gel in one tray. |
| Testers and counter samples | Short digital runs of 100-500 with simplified artwork and a "not for sale" panel. |
If your bottle is over roughly 300g filled, or the retail price is above the point where the customer expects ceremony, the rigid build is the right call. Below that a well-finished folding carton is more sensible and far cheaper to ship.
Material Specification
A perfume pack uses either folding board or a rigid greyboard core - the two are not interchangeable, and specifying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| Structural core | Greyboard / chipboard 1.0-3.0mm (roughly 1,000-2,500gsm), made from 80-100% recycled fibre. 1.5mm for small boxes, 2mm standard, 2.5-3mm for oversized builds. |
| Exterior wrap | 128-157gsm coated art paper for full CMYK, or specialty stock such as linen emboss, leatherette, felt-touch and pearlescent for foil-and-emboss work. |
| Interior lining | Wrap paper, flock paper, velvet or satin, specified independently of the exterior. A dark exterior with a contrast interior is standard practice. |
| Insert | Die-cut paperboard tray, moulded pulp, EVA foam or flocked tray. Paperboard and pulp keep the box mono-material and easier to recycle. |
| Adhesive | Solvent-free water-based glue, so the finished box stays in the paper recycling stream. |
| Folding board route | 350-400gsm SBS or FBB for the carton version, with a die-cut paperboard cradle. Correct for mass and mid-market; it will not deliver a rigid corner. |
| Specialty wrap papers | Linen emboss, felt-touch, leatherette, pearlescent and uncoated coloured stock. This is where fragrance packaging differentiates itself. |
Sustainability notes
- The greyboard core of a rigid perfume box is 80-100% recycled fibre, which is the bulk of the pack by weight.
- A moulded pulp or die-cut paperboard cradle replaces the EVA foam used in most fragrance packs and keeps the box mono-material.
- Cellophane overwrap is the least sustainable element of a traditional fragrance pack. A tuck-and-seal carton or a paper band achieves the tamper-evidence without the film.
- Refill programmes are the largest available saving in fragrance: the refill carton uses a fraction of the material of the first-purchase pack.
- Foil stamping in small areas is preferable to a fully metallised board, which cannot be recycled as paper.
Structure and Size Options
Fragrance is where finishing options actually change the sale, so these are worth specifying carefully.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Build | Folding carton with cradle, rigid lid and base, book-style magnetic box, or drawer and sleeve. |
| Cradle | Die-cut paperboard, moulded pulp, EVA foam or flocked tray, cut to the exact flacon profile from a 3D scan or a physical sample. |
| Wrap paper | Coated art paper for CMYK, or specialty linen, felt-touch and leatherette stock for foil and emboss work. |
| Foil and emboss | Combination emboss-and-foil on the logo is the single most requested finish in this category. |
| Interior | Contrast lining in flock, satin or printed paper. A dark exterior with a bright interior is the classic fragrance treatment. |
| Closure | Magnetic flap, ribbon pull, tuck-and-seal or a full cellophane overwrap for tamper evidence. |
Send the actual empty flacon, not just drawings. Glass tolerances vary between mould cavities, and a cradle cut to a CAD file rather than a real bottle is the usual cause of a bottle that will not seat.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.
Ordering: MOQ, Dieline and Lead Time
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| MOQ | 100 pcs per size and per design |
| Dieline | Free. We send a print-ready structural dieline to your designer before you commit to anything. |
| Pre-production sample | Plain structural sample in 3-5 days, printed sample in 5-7 days. Sample cost is credited against the bulk order. |
| Production lead time | 8-12 working days for folding cartons, 15-20 days for rigid builds after artwork and sample sign-off |
| Artwork format | AI or PDF, CMYK, 300dpi, 3mm bleed, fonts outlined, placed on our dieline |
| Shipping | Folding cartons ship flat; rigid boxes ship assembled, or collapsible if freight volume matters. |
For a rigid perfume box, budget an extra week over a folding carton. The wrap, the cradle cutting and the hand-assembly stages are all sequential and cannot be compressed without quality showing it.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should a perfume box be a rigid box or a folding carton?
It follows price position and bottle weight. Under roughly 300g filled and at mass or mid-market pricing, a 400gsm folding carton with a paperboard cradle is correct and much cheaper to ship. Above that, or at prestige pricing, use a rigid lid-and-base on 2mm greyboard - the weight and the way the lid settles are part of what the customer is buying.
What board is used for a rigid perfume box?
A 1.5-2mm greyboard (chipboard) core, wrapped in 128-157gsm printed art paper or a specialty stock such as linen emboss or leatherette. It is not white SBS carton board - folding board cannot hold a rigid square corner, which is the single most common specification error we see.
How do you stop the glass bottle moving inside the box?
With a cradle cut to the actual flacon profile: die-cut paperboard, moulded pulp, EVA foam or a flocked tray. We cut it from a physical sample rather than a drawing, because glass moulds vary enough between cavities that a CAD-only cradle often will not seat the bottle properly.
Can perfume packaging be recyclable?
Mostly. The greyboard core is already 80-100% recycled fibre and a paperboard or pulp cradle keeps the box mono-material. The two things that break the claim are cellophane overwrap and EVA foam. Replace the overwrap with a tuck-and-seal or paper band, and the foam with pulp, and the pack recycles as paper.
Do you make refill cartons as well as the main pack?
Yes, and it is worth planning both at once. Fragrance refills are the largest material saving available in this category - the refill carton uses a fraction of the board of the first-purchase pack, and running both dielines together saves a second development cycle.
What is the MOQ and lead time for perfume boxes?
100 pcs per size and per design. Folding cartons run 8-12 working days after sign-off; rigid builds need 15-20 days because wrapping, cradle cutting and hand assembly are sequential steps. The structural dieline is free either way.
