What Is a Rigid Gift Box (Set-Up Box)?
A rigid gift box, called a set-up box in the trade, is built from greyboard that is cut, cornered and then wrapped in a printed or specialty paper. Unlike a folding carton it arrives at your warehouse already assembled and holds its shape permanently. That single difference drives everything else about the format: the feel in the hand, the price per unit, the freight cost and the lead time.
The structural rule of thumb is board thickness. 1.5mm greyboard suits small boxes up to roughly 150mm across, 2mm is the general-purpose standard and what most brands end up specifying, and 2.5-3mm is used on oversized builds or where the brand deliberately wants weight in the hand. Thicker board costs more in material but far more in freight, because a rigid box ships as air.
A rigid box is two separate specifications, not one. The exterior wrap decides how it photographs and how it prints; the interior lining and insert decide how it feels when opened. Brands routinely overspend on the outside and underspend on the inside, and it is the inside that the customer remembers.

If the box will be opened in front of someone - handed over as a gift, filmed for an unboxing, presented at a counter - the closure and the interior are worth more than a thicker board. If it will be opened alone at a kitchen table, spend the money on the print instead.
Material Specification
Rigid boxes are built from greyboard, not from white cardboard. Any quote that describes a rigid box as 350gsm white board is quoting a folding carton, which is a different product at a different price.

Sustainability notes
- The greyboard core is 80-100% recycled fibre, so the heaviest component of a rigid box is already a recycled material.
- Water-based glue keeps the finished box in the paper recycling stream, provided the wrap paper is not film-laminated.
- A die-cut paperboard or moulded pulp insert replaces EVA foam and keeps the pack mono-material. Velvet and flock look richer but end the recyclability claim.
- Rigid boxes are shipped assembled, so freight volume is the real footprint issue. A collapsible magnetic build cuts shipping volume by roughly 60-70%.
- Aqueous varnish or an uncoated specialty wrap is the recyclable alternative to soft-touch film lamination.

Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.
