What Is a Printed Shipping Box?
A printed shipping box is a corrugated carton designed to be the only pack between your product and the customer. It has two jobs at once - survive a courier network that will drop, stack and compress it, and still look like your brand when it arrives. Those two jobs pull in different directions, and most of the specification work is about balancing them.
Flute choice is where that balance is decided. E-flute at 1.5mm prints beautifully and keeps the box slim, but carries less. B-flute at 3mm takes real weight while still printing acceptably. EB double wall at 4.5mm is for parcels above roughly 5kg or long international routes. Choosing the flute from the print quality you want, rather than from the load, is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.
The second decision is print method. Direct flexo puts 1-3 spot colours straight onto the board - low cost, honest, works perfectly on natural kraft. Litho-lamination prints the artwork on a separate sheet and bonds it to the flute, which is how photographic, full-coverage designs are done. Litho costs more and adds a plastic-free but glued layer, so use it only when the artwork genuinely needs it.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Shipping boxes are quoted by weight, route and how much of the brand experience is expected to happen at the doorstep.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| E-commerce apparel and accessories | E-flute mailer with a self-locking tuck front, printed inside and out, sealed with paper tape and shipped alone. |
| Subscription boxes | E-flute mailer with a tear strip and a printed interior, designed so the reveal is a monthly repeat experience. |
| Glassware, ceramics and fragile goods | B-flute or EB double wall with a die-cut fitment or moulded pulp cradle, specified to pass a drop test rather than to look good. |
| Heavy or bulk shipments | EB double wall regular slotted carton, plain or 1-colour, where cost per unit and stacking strength are the only criteria. |
| Retail-ready shipper displays | Litho-laminated B-flute with a perforated front that tears away to become a shelf display, so one box serves transit and merchandising. |
| Returns-friendly D2C | Double adhesive lip so the customer reseals the same box for a return, cutting return packaging entirely. |
Print the inside face. On a shipping box it costs very little relative to the total, and for a direct-to-consumer brand it is the whole first impression - a plain brown interior undoes an expensive exterior.
Material Specification
Everything on a shipping box follows from the flute. Set it from the loaded weight and the shipping route first, then decide how to print it.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| E-flute (1.5mm) | The retail-facing flute. Takes litho-laminated or direct-print artwork cleanly and keeps the box slim. |
| B-flute (3mm) | More crush resistance for heavier or bulkier contents while still printing acceptably. |
| EB double wall (4.5mm) | Used when the pack ships alone internationally or carries more than roughly 5kg. |
| Liner | White top kraft for full-colour print, or natural brown kraft for an unbleached recycled look. |
| Fluting medium | Recycled semi-chemical medium; the corrugated body is typically 70-100% recycled content. |
| Print method | Direct flexo for 1-3 spot colours, or litho-lamination when the artwork needs photographic CMYK. |
Sustainability notes
- Corrugated board is the most widely recycled packaging material in the world, with recovery rates above 80-90% in most developed markets.
- The fluting medium is typically 70-100% recycled fibre, and the liner can be specified as recycled kraft rather than bleached white.
- Water-activated paper tape and paper-based void fill keep the whole parcel in a single recycling stream - one plastic tape strip is enough to break that.
- Right-sizing the box removes both board and void fill, and usually lowers dimensional-weight freight cost at the same time.
- Direct flexo printing on natural kraft avoids the plastic film of a litho-laminated finish and is the lower-impact route when the artwork allows it.
Structure, Closure and Print Options
A shipping box has more genuinely useful structural options than any other format, and most cost little.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Build | Self-locking mailer, regular slotted carton (RSC), die-cut tuck-top, or a shipper display with a tear-away front. |
| Flute | E-flute 1.5mm for retail-facing slim packs, B-flute 3mm for weight, EB double wall 4.5mm for parcels above roughly 5kg. |
| Print method | Direct flexo for 1-3 spot colours on kraft; litho-lamination when the artwork needs photographic CMYK coverage. |
| Tear strip | Integrated perforated strip so the customer opens the box without a knife - and without cutting the product inside. |
| Double adhesive lip | A second seal strip so the same box can be resealed for a return, removing the need for separate returns packaging. |
| Interior print | Full-colour inside face, a printed message panel, or a pattern. Highest-return, lowest-cost upgrade in the category. |
Water-activated paper tape rather than plastic tape keeps the whole parcel in one recycling stream, and it holds better on kraft than plastic tape does.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which flute should I choose for my shipping box?
Set it from the loaded weight and route, not from the artwork. E-flute (1.5mm) for slim retail-facing packs, B-flute (3mm) when the box carries real weight, EB double wall (4.5mm) above roughly 5kg or on long international routes. Choosing flute for print quality is the most expensive mistake in this category.
What is the difference between flexo and litho-laminated printing?
Direct flexo prints 1-3 spot colours straight onto the board - low cost and it looks right on natural kraft. Litho-lamination prints the artwork on a separate sheet and bonds it to the flute, which is the only way to get photographic full-coverage CMYK. Litho costs more, so use it only when the design genuinely needs it.
Is it worth printing the inside of a shipping box?
For a direct-to-consumer brand, yes. It adds very little to the unit cost and it is the entire first impression at the doorstep. A plain brown interior undoes an expensive exterior, and the interior is the one surface that is guaranteed to be seen up close.
Can the same box be used for returns?
Yes, with a double adhesive lip. The first strip seals the outbound shipment, the second lets the customer reseal the same box for a return. It removes the need for separate returns packaging entirely and costs very little to add at dieline stage.
How sustainable are corrugated shipping boxes?
Corrugated is the most widely recycled packaging material in the world, with recovery above 80-90% in most developed markets, and the fluting medium is typically 70-100% recycled fibre. The two things that break the claim are plastic tape and plastic void fill - use water-activated paper tape and paper fill.
What is your MOQ and lead time?
100 pcs per size and design, 8-14 working days production after artwork and sample sign-off. The structural dieline is free and issued before you order so your designer can lay out the closure panel and interior print correctly the first time.
