What Is a Candle Box?
A candle box is packaging built around a heavy, fragile, cylindrical object with a lid that must not be scratched. That combination is unusual: the pack has to resist impact like a glassware carton, hold the jar centred so it cannot rattle, and still present well because candles are bought as gifts more often than for personal use.
Every candle box starts from the jar, not the candle. Jar diameter, jar height with the lid on, and whether the lid is metal, wood or glass determine the internal dimensions and the collar cut. A 3-wick tumbler at 100mm diameter and a 9oz jar at 76mm need completely different dielines even though both are described as "a candle".
The second decision is the shipping channel. A candle sold in-store can be a printed folding carton. A candle shipped direct-to-consumer on its own needs E-flute corrugated - a plain 350gsm folding carton around a glass jar will not survive a courier network, and glass breakage is the most expensive failure in this category.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Candle packaging splits cleanly by retail price point and by shipping channel.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Premium and gifting candles | Rigid lid and base on 1.5-2mm greyboard with a paperboard collar sized to the jar, soft-touch or uncoated specialty wrap. |
| Volume retail lines | 350-400gsm folding carton, tuck-top or auto-bottom, shipping flat and erected in-house to keep unit cost down. |
| Direct-to-consumer candles | E-flute corrugated mailer with a die-cut collar, printed inside, sealed with paper tape and shipped without an outer carton. |
| Candle gift sets | Compartmented tray holding 2-3 jars plus matches or a wick trimmer, each item in a fixed position so nothing moves in transit. |
| Refill and eco lines | Uncoated kraft carton with a moulded pulp cradle, no film lamination, marketed on the recyclability of the whole pack. |
| Wax melts and tealights | Shallow folding carton with a die-cut tray, or a window carton showing the wax colour on shelf. |
Wick length is the dimension buyers forget. A trimmed wick still adds height above the wax line, and a lid-off presentation box cut to the wax surface will foul the wick. Give us the jar height with the lid fitted and the wick untrimmed.
Material Specification
Board choice is decided by weight and by shipping channel, not by how premium the brand wants to look - a glass jar is a structural problem before it is a design one.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| Rigid greyboard 1.5-2mm | Wrapped in printed art paper or specialty stock. The standard for candle gifting and for tumblers sold above roughly USD 25 retail. |
| Folding board 350-400gsm | SBS, FBB or kraft for a printed tuck-top candle carton. Ships flat, far lower freight cost, correct for volume retail lines. |
| E-flute corrugated | 1.5mm laminated board when the candle ships direct-to-consumer without an outer carton. Glass needs the flute; a plain folding carton will not survive a courier network. |
| Insert | Die-cut paperboard collar or moulded pulp cradle sized to the jar diameter. Both keep the pack mono-material; EVA foam does not. |
| Interior | Printed inner face or a plain recycled liner. Candle buyers open the box in front of the recipient, so the inside is visible at the moment that matters. |
| Finish | Soft-touch lamination is the most requested candle finish, but aqueous varnish is the recyclable equivalent and reads almost as premium on an uncoated stock. |
Sustainability notes
- Aqueous varnish keeps the carton kerbside-recyclable; matte or gloss BOPP film does not, because the mill has to separate the plastic layer.
- CCNB and kraft stocks carry 80-100% recycled fibre and cost less than virgin SBS, so the recycled option is usually also the cheaper option.
- Cartons ship and store flat, so a container holds several times more empty cartons than pre-glued rigid boxes - a real reduction in freight emissions per unit.
- Water-based glue and soy-based inks are standard on every job, with no solvent-based adhesive used anywhere in the line.
- Right-sizing the dieline to the actual product is the largest single saving available: trimming headspace across a range removes more board than any stock change.
Structure, Insert and Finish Options
The collar is the component that does the real work; everything else is presentation.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Build | Rigid lid and base for gifting, folding tuck-top or auto-bottom for retail, E-flute mailer for direct shipping. |
| Collar / insert | Die-cut paperboard collar or moulded pulp cradle cut to your jar diameter. Both keep the pack mono-material; EVA foam does not. |
| Window | Die-cut aperture showing the wax colour, patched with PET or with cellulose film for the compostable-friendly route. |
| Interior print | Printed inner face. Candles are opened in front of the recipient more often than any other gift, so the inside is visible at the moment that matters. |
| Finish | Soft-touch lamination is the most requested candle finish; aqueous varnish on an uncoated stock is the recyclable equivalent and reads almost as premium. |
| Extras | Belly band, wax seal sticker, burn-instruction card seated in the lid, or a printed dust cover for the jar. |
If you sell both in-store and online, it is usually cheaper to run one E-flute build for both than to run two separate dielines. The corrugated box prints well litho-laminated and is the only one of the two that survives a courier network unprotected.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size should a candle box be?
It is set from the jar, not the candle. We need jar diameter, jar height with the lid fitted, and the wick untrimmed. A 3-wick tumbler at 100mm diameter and a 9oz jar at 76mm need completely different dielines even though both are just "a candle" on a brief.
Can a candle ship in a folding carton without an outer box?
No. A 350gsm folding carton around a glass jar will not survive a courier network, and glass breakage is the most expensive failure in this category. For direct-to-consumer you need E-flute corrugated with a die-cut collar. Folding cartons are for candles that ship inside an outer shipper or sell in-store.
What insert holds the jar in place?
A die-cut paperboard collar or a moulded pulp cradle sized to your jar diameter. Both keep the pack mono-material and recyclable. EVA foam works too but ends the recyclability claim and costs more.
What is the most sustainable candle box?
Uncoated kraft or recycled board, aqueous varnish instead of film lamination, a paperboard or moulded pulp collar, and no plastic window. That combination keeps the whole pack in one recycling stream. Soft-touch lamination is the single most common thing that breaks it.
Should I print the inside of the box?
For candles, yes. They are opened in front of the recipient more often than any other gift category, so the interior is visible at exactly the moment the brand impression is formed. It adds very little to the unit cost relative to the total.
What is your MOQ, and is the dieline free?
100 pcs per size and design. The structural dieline is free and issued before you order, so your designer can position the collar cut and the artwork correctly the first time. Production is 8-14 working days after sign-off.
