What Is an Auto Bottom (Crash Lock) Carton?
An auto bottom carton - also called a crash lock bottom, snap lock or auto-lock carton - arrives with the base panels pre-glued and interlocked. Squeeze the carton open and the bottom forms and locks itself in one motion. No taping, no folding, no assembly labour.
The mechanical lock is the point. A tuck end bottom holds by friction and will give way under weight; an auto bottom distributes load across four interlocked panels and holds it. This is the structure to use when the carton has to carry a filled glass bottle, a jar of honey, a bottle of oil or a boxed appliance.
The second reason brands move to it is labour. On a hand-fill line an operator erects an auto bottom in roughly one second versus five to eight seconds for a tuck bottom. Across 5,000 units that is several hours of labour, which usually outweighs the 10-15% higher tooling and gluing cost of the structure itself.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Anything heavy, anything filled by hand at volume, anything that must not drop out of the bottom of the box.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Wine, spirits and oils | Single-bottle cartons. 400gsm board or E-flute laminate, with a corrugated collar or paperboard cradle to stop the bottle moving. |
| Food and preserves | Jars of honey, sauces, condiments. 350-400gsm with a grease-resistant coating where needed. |
| Candles and home fragrance | Filled glass vessels of 200-600g. The crash lock base is the reason the carton survives being lifted by one hand. |
| Small appliances and electricals | 400gsm litho-laminated E-flute for a printed retail face with corrugated strength underneath. |
| Pet food and treats | Larger footprint cartons where a friction bottom would sag under granular weight. |
| Subscription and e-commerce fulfilment | High-volume hand packing where seconds per unit matter more than material cost. |
If your product is light and cost is the driver, a reverse tuck end carton does the same job for less. The auto bottom earns its price only when weight or fill speed is involved.
Material Specification
Board choice matters more here than on any other carton style, because the base has to carry load rather than just contain it.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| SBS / C1S folding boxboard | 300-400gsm virgin bleached board, one side coated. The default for retail cartons that need clean CMYK and a bright white face. |
| FBB (GC1 folding boxboard) | 230-400gsm multi-ply with a bulky middle layer. Same print quality as SBS but stiffer at equal weight, so it is often the cheaper way to hit a target rigidity. |
| CCNB / recycled duplex board | 300-450gsm coated white face over a grey recycled back. 80-100% recycled fibre and the lowest-carbon option when the inside of the carton is not seen. |
| Kraft board | 300-400gsm unbleached brown board for a visible natural look. Prints best with 1-2 spot colours rather than full CMYK. |
| E-flute microflute | 1.5mm laminated litho board used when the carton has to carry weight or survive e-commerce transit on its own. |
| Coatings and inks | Water-based aqueous varnish, matte or gloss BOPP film, soy-based inks. Aqueous keeps the carton kerbside-recyclable; film lamination does not. |
Sustainability notes
- Folding cartons are the most widely recycled retail pack in the world - a plain aqueous-varnished carton goes straight into the kerbside paper stream.
- CCNB and recycled duplex board carry 80-100% recycled fibre and cost less than virgin SBS, so the greener stock is often the cheaper stock.
- We default to water-based aqueous varnish instead of BOPP film lamination. Film adds a plastic layer that has to be separated at the mill.
- Soy-based and vegetable inks as standard, no solvent-based inks.
- Cartons ship flat, so a pallet holds several times more units than an assembled rigid box - a real reduction in freight emissions per unit.
Structure and Size Options
The base is fixed by the structure; everything above it is open.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Top closure | Straight or reverse tuck top, tuck-and-slit lock, or a full glued top flap for tamper evidence. |
| Base reinforcement | A separate corrugated pad dropped into the base adds load capacity without moving to a heavier board. |
| Load rating | 350gsm handles up to roughly 1kg, 400gsm up to 2kg, and E-flute laminate above that. We test to your actual filled weight. |
| Handle | Die-cut hand hole or a glued ribbon handle for gift and multi-pack formats. |
| Window patching | PET, PLA or cellulose film, kept clear of the base crease zone. |
| Inner fitment | Corrugated collar, paperboard cradle or moulded pulp cradle for bottles and jars. |
Auto bottom cartons ship flat but not fully flat - the pre-glued base adds a small amount of bulk, so a pallet holds roughly 10-15% fewer cartons than the equivalent tuck end. Worth knowing when you budget freight.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.
Ordering: MOQ, Dieline and Lead Time

| MOQ | 100 pcs per size and per design |
| Dieline | Free. We send a print-ready structural dieline to your designer before you commit to anything. |
| Pre-production sample | Plain structural sample in 3-5 days, printed sample in 5-7 days. Sample cost is credited against the bulk order. |
| Production lead time | 10-14 working days after artwork and sample sign-off |
| Artwork format | AI or PDF, CMYK, 300dpi, 3mm bleed, fonts outlined, placed on our dieline |
| Shipping | Ships flat-packed, which keeps freight volume and duty low. |
Lead time runs slightly longer than a tuck end because the base is glued and has to cure before packing. Tell us your filled product weight with the enquiry and we will spec the board to it rather than guessing.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an auto bottom and a 1-2-3 bottom carton?
An auto bottom is pre-glued at the factory and locks itself when you squeeze the carton open - about one second per unit. A 1-2-3 bottom is not glued; the operator folds three base flaps in sequence by hand, taking five to eight seconds. Auto bottom costs more to tool and glue but pays back in labour; 1-2-3 is cheaper per carton and better for low volumes.
How much weight can an auto bottom carton hold?
As a working guide, 350gsm board handles up to about 1kg, 400gsm up to about 2kg, and litho-laminated E-flute above that. The real limit depends on the base footprint and how the load is distributed, so send us the filled weight and dimensions and we will spec the board rather than estimate.
Do auto bottom cartons ship flat?
Yes, they ship flat and glued, ready to erect. They are marginally bulkier than a tuck end because the base is already glued, so a pallet holds roughly 10-15% fewer units. Factor that into freight if you are shipping large volumes internationally.
Is an auto bottom carton worth the extra cost for a small run?
For 100-500 pieces usually not, unless the product is heavy. At low volume the labour saving is small and the tooling and gluing premium is spread over few units. If your content is under about 500g and volume is low, a reverse tuck end is the more economical choice.
What is your MOQ and is the dieline free?
100 pcs per size and per design. The dieline is free and print-ready - we send it before you commit so your designer works to the correct crease and bleed from the start. No artwork setup charge and no template fee.
Can you add a corrugated insert to hold a bottle?
Yes. For single-bottle cartons we normally add a corrugated collar or a die-cut paperboard cradle so the bottle cannot move laterally. Moulded pulp cradles are available if you want the whole pack to stay mono-material and plastic-free.
