What Is a Wine Gift Box?
A wine gift box is one of the few gift formats where weight is the governing constraint. A filled 750ml bottle is roughly 1.2kg, and a twin-bottle box is 2.5kg before packaging. That load decides the board thickness, the cradle, the closure strength and whether the box can be handed over by a handle at all.
Bottle shape is the second variable, and it is the one that most often breaks a first dieline. A Bordeaux bottle, a Burgundy bottle and a sparkling bottle differ in shoulder profile, diameter and height, so a cradle cut for one will not hold another. Champagne bottles are heavier again and need a deeper cradle wall.
Then decide whether the box ships. A presentation box handed over in-store can be rigid greyboard. A bottle sent through a courier network needs a corrugated shipper or a moulded pulp shell inside an outer carton - rigid board alone does not pass a drop test with 1.2kg of glass inside it.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Wine and spirits packaging is quoted by bottle count, bottle shape and shipping route.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Single bottle presentation | 2mm greyboard lid and base or a magnetic book-style build with a die-cut cradle, handed over in-store or at an event. |
| Twin and triple bottle sets | 2.5mm board with a compartmented cradle and a reinforced base, because the loaded weight passes 2.5kg. |
| Champagne and sparkling | Deeper cradle wall and a taller box to clear the cork cage; heavier bottle weight means the closure has to be specified up. |
| Spirits and premium liquor | Book-style magnetic box with a moulded pulp or flocked cradle, foil-blocked logo, often with a separate compartment for a tasting card. |
| Corporate and seasonal gifting | Bottle plus glassware or food items in a compartmented tray, shipped direct to recipients, so the outer build is corrugated rather than rigid. |
| E-commerce wine shipping | E-flute or double-wall corrugated shipper with a moulded pulp bottle shell, designed to pass a drop test rather than to present. |
Presentation and shipping are two different jobs. Brands that try to solve both with one rigid box either overspend on a shipper or under-protect a presentation box - the usual answer is a rigid gift box inside a plain corrugated outer.
Material Specification
Board thickness on a wine box is a weight calculation, not a style choice. 1.5mm greyboard visibly flexes under a full bottle and the lid stops sitting square.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| Rigid greyboard 2-2.5mm | The standard for a single or twin bottle presentation box. A full 750ml bottle weighs around 1.2kg, so 1.5mm board flexes and the lid stops sitting square. |
| Exterior wrap | 128-157gsm art paper for print, or linen, leatherette and uncoated textured stock, which is what most wine and spirits brands specify. |
| Bottle cradle | Die-cut paperboard cradle, moulded pulp shell or EVA foam. Moulded pulp is the strongest per gram and keeps the pack recyclable; EVA protects best but ends the recyclability claim. |
| E-flute corrugated | 1.5-3mm laminated board for bottle shippers that travel alone. Any bottle entering a courier network unprotected needs corrugated, not rigid board. |
| Folding board 400gsm | For lighter sleeve-and-tray builds around a single bottle sold in-store rather than shipped. |
| Closure | Magnetic flap, ribbon pull, wooden-look toggle or a simple lift-off lid. Magnets on a bottle box need to be stronger than on a small gift box because of the weight of the contents. |
Sustainability notes
- The greyboard core is 80-100% recycled fibre, so the heaviest component of a rigid box is already a recycled material.
- Water-based glue keeps the finished box in the paper recycling stream, provided the wrap paper is not film-laminated.
- A die-cut paperboard or moulded pulp insert replaces EVA foam and keeps the pack mono-material. Velvet and flock look richer but end the recyclability claim.
- Rigid boxes are shipped assembled, so freight volume is the real footprint issue. A collapsible magnetic build cuts shipping volume by roughly 60-70%.
- Aqueous varnish or an uncoated specialty wrap is the recyclable alternative to soft-touch film lamination.
Structure, Cradle and Closure Options
The cradle carries the bottle; the closure carries the box. Both are specified against the loaded weight.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Build | Lid and base, magnetic book-style, drawer, or a sleeve-and-tray for lighter in-store presentation. |
| Cradle | Die-cut paperboard, moulded pulp or EVA foam. Moulded pulp is the strongest per gram and keeps the pack recyclable. |
| Bottle profile | Bordeaux, Burgundy, sparkling or spirits. Send the actual bottle - shoulder profile differs enough between them to require separate cradles. |
| Closure | Magnetic flap, ribbon pull or toggle. Magnets on a bottle box are specified stronger than on a small gift box because of the load. |
| Handle | Rope, ribbon or a die-cut handle with a reinforced panel. A handle on an unreinforced 2mm box will tear at the fixing point under 1.2kg. |
| Extras | Compartment for a corkscrew, glasses or a tasting note card, and a printed inner face visible when the lid opens. |
If you want a handle, say so at dieline stage. Adding one after the structure is fixed usually means re-cutting the whole box, because the handle needs a reinforced panel built into the wrap.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.
Ordering: MOQ, Dieline and Lead Time
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| MOQ | 100 pcs per size and per design |
| Dieline | Free. We send a print-ready structural dieline to your designer before you commit to anything. |
| Pre-production sample | Plain structural sample in 3-5 days, printed sample in 5-7 days. Sample cost is credited against the bulk order. |
| Production lead time | 12-18 working days after artwork and sample sign-off |
| Artwork format | AI or PDF, CMYK, 300dpi, 3mm bleed, fonts outlined, placed on our dieline |
| Shipping | Rigid boxes ship assembled unless built collapsible. A collapsible magnetic build cuts shipping volume by roughly 60-70% and is worth costing on any order above a few hundred pieces. |
Send one filled bottle of each shape you intend to pack. A wine cradle cut from published bottle dimensions rather than from a physical bottle is the most common cause of a second sample round.

Surface Choice

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What board thickness does a wine box need?
2mm greyboard for a single bottle and 2.5mm for twin and triple sets. A filled 750ml bottle is around 1.2kg; at 1.5mm the panels visibly flex and the lid stops sitting square. This is a weight calculation, not a style preference.
Will one cradle fit different bottle shapes?
No. Bordeaux, Burgundy, sparkling and spirits bottles differ in shoulder profile, diameter and height, so a cradle cut for one will not hold another securely. Send one filled bottle of each shape you intend to pack and we cut the cradle from the real thing.
Can a rigid wine box be shipped on its own?
Not safely. Rigid board alone does not pass a drop test with 1.2kg of glass inside. For courier shipping you need a corrugated shipper with a moulded pulp bottle shell, or the rigid presentation box placed inside a plain corrugated outer - which is what most brands do.
Can you add a handle to a wine box?
Yes, as rope, ribbon or a die-cut handle, but it must be designed in at dieline stage. A handle fitted to an unreinforced 2mm box tears at the fixing point under a full bottle, and adding a reinforced panel afterwards usually means re-cutting the whole structure.
What is the most recyclable wine gift box?
Greyboard shell with a moulded pulp or die-cut paperboard cradle, aqueous varnish rather than film lamination, and no EVA foam. That keeps the entire pack in the paper recycling stream, and moulded pulp is also the strongest cradle per gram.
What is your MOQ and lead time?
100 pcs per size and design, 12-18 working days production after artwork and sample sign-off. Rigid boxes run longer than folding cartons because wrapping and cradle fitting are hand-assisted. The dieline is free and issued before you order.
