What Is a Christmas Gift Box?
A Christmas gift box is a seasonal pack with a hard deadline attached. Structurally it is an ordinary rigid box, folding carton or corrugated mailer; commercially it is completely different, because the whole run has to be printed, shipped, filled and on shelf before a date that does not move.
That deadline drives the schedule backwards. Artwork sign-off in July, production in August, sea freight arriving September to October, retail filling in November. Brands that start the conversation in October are choosing between air freight and a missed season, and both are expensive.
Design-wise, seasonal packaging behaves differently to a permanent line. It is bought partly on shelf impact, so foil, spot UV and deep colour do more work here than on a year-round SKU. It is also frequently kept and reused as a storage box, which is a genuine argument for spending on a rigid build rather than a printed carton.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Seasonal packaging is specified by whether it is filled by you, filled by a retailer, or shipped direct to a recipient.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Retail seasonal ranges | 300-400gsm folding cartons in a co-ordinated family, shipped flat and erected in store or at the filling line. |
| Advent calendars | Multi-cavity tray with a printed front panel and 24 die-cut doors, or a drawer matrix. Cavity size is set from the smallest item in the range. |
| Hampers and food gifting | E-flute or B-flute corrugated with a compartmented tray, sized so nothing shifts when the hamper is carried by one hand. |
| Keepsake and premium gifting | 1.5-2mm rigid greyboard with foil and a magnetic lid, built to be kept and reused after the season. |
| Corporate Christmas gifting | Compartmented box holding unrelated items in fixed positions, shipped direct to recipient addresses, so the outer build must be corrugated. |
| Cracker and stocking-filler packs | Lightweight kraft or CCNB cartons produced at volume, where material cost per unit dominates the decision. |
If the box ships direct to a recipient rather than to a store, the build has to be corrugated. A printed folding carton posted on its own arrives crushed, and at Christmas there is no time to reprint.
Material Specification
Seasonal ranges usually mix builds - a rigid hero box plus several folding cartons - printed together on one artwork system so the family reads as one range.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| Rigid greyboard 1.5-2mm | For keepsake Christmas boxes intended to be reused or stored. The build customers keep rather than recycle. |
| Folding board 300-400gsm | SBS or FBB for printed seasonal cartons produced in volume. Ships flat, which matters when the whole range lands in one September shipment. |
| Recycled CCNB and kraft | 80-100% recycled fibre for seasonal ranges sold on an eco story, or where the run is large enough that material cost dominates. |
| E-flute corrugated | For hampers, multi-item gift sets and anything shipped direct to a recipient rather than carried out of a store. |
| Seasonal finishes | Hot foil in gold, silver, red and holographic; glitter varnish; spot UV snowflake patterns. Foil is the highest-impact and prints cleanly on both coated and uncoated stock. |
| Inks and coatings | Soy-based inks with aqueous varnish for the recyclable route, or matte film lamination where a deep colour has to stay scuff-free through a whole retail season. |
Sustainability notes
- Aqueous varnish keeps the carton kerbside-recyclable; matte or gloss BOPP film does not, because the mill has to separate the plastic layer.
- CCNB and kraft stocks carry 80-100% recycled fibre and cost less than virgin SBS, so the recycled option is usually also the cheaper option.
- Cartons ship and store flat, so a container holds several times more empty cartons than pre-glued rigid boxes - a real reduction in freight emissions per unit.
- Water-based glue and soy-based inks are standard on every job, with no solvent-based adhesive used anywhere in the line.
- Right-sizing the dieline to the actual product is the largest single saving available: trimming headspace across a range removes more board than any stock change.
Seasonal Structures and Finishes
Foil and colour depth carry more weight at Christmas than at any other point in the year.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Build | Rigid magnetic for the hero SKU, folding tuck-top or auto-bottom for volume lines, corrugated mailer for direct shipping. |
| Foil | Gold, silver, red and holographic hot foil. The highest-impact seasonal finish and it prints cleanly on both coated and uncoated stock. |
| Spot UV and glitter varnish | Gloss patterns over a matte laminate - snowflakes, frost, typography - visible only at an angle, which is exactly the shelf effect wanted. |
| Window | Die-cut aperture showing the product, patched with PET or cellulose film. |
| Ribbon and closures | Ribbon pull, satin tie, magnetic flap or a printed belly band that can be swapped year to year over a standing box design. |
| Range consistency | One artwork system across every size in the family, so the range reads as a set on shelf rather than as separate SKUs. |
A cost-efficient trick for seasonal ranges: keep the box structure and base print constant across years and change only the belly band or sleeve. You reuse the dieline and the setup, and the range still looks new.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do I need to order Christmas packaging?
Work backwards from the shelf date. Artwork sign-off in July, production in August, sea freight arriving September to October, retail filling in November. Starting the conversation in October leaves a choice between air freight and missing the season, and both are expensive.
What finishes work best on seasonal packaging?
Hot foil in gold, silver, red or holographic is the highest-impact option and prints cleanly on coated and uncoated stock. Spot UV over a matte laminate gives a pattern that only shows at an angle, which is exactly the effect that works on a crowded seasonal shelf.
Can a Christmas box be shipped direct to a recipient?
Only if it is a corrugated build. A printed folding carton posted on its own arrives crushed, and at Christmas there is no reprint window. For direct-to-recipient gifting, specify E-flute or B-flute with a compartmented tray.
How do you make an advent calendar box?
A multi-cavity tray with a printed front panel and 24 die-cut doors, or a matrix of small drawers. Cavity size is set from the smallest item in the range, and the front panel needs a heavier board than a normal carton so the doors stay flat after they are opened.
How can I reduce cost across a seasonal range?
Keep the box structure and base print constant from year to year and change only the belly band or sleeve. You reuse the dieline and the setup while the range still looks new. Running all sizes as one project on a shared artwork system saves a second setup as well.
What is your MOQ for seasonal boxes?
100 pcs per size and design, which is low enough to test a seasonal concept without committing to a full range. Production is 10-16 working days after sign-off, and the structural dieline is free.
