What Is a Custom Jewellery Box?
A jewellery box is a small rigid box whose job is almost entirely about the interior. The outside is a wrapped greyboard shell like any other rigid box; what makes it a jewellery box is the cavity - a ring slit, a necklace hook bar, a bracelet pillow - lined in velvet, flock or satin and cut to hold one specific piece in one specific position.
Because the pieces are small and valuable, the tolerances are tighter than on any other gift format. A ring slit 1mm too wide lets the ring rotate and the whole box reads as cheap. This is why we build jewellery inserts from the actual piece or from its exact dimensions, not from a category average.
The second thing that separates jewellery boxes from other rigid work is service life. A counter display box is opened and closed dozens of times a day, so the hinge choice matters: a paper hinge is cheaper and fine for a box the customer takes home, while a separate lid and base or a reinforced hinge is what survives in-store handling.

- The greyboard shell is 80-100% recycled fibre, so the largest component of a jewellery box is already recycled.
- Velvet and flock are the recyclability problem, not the board. A die-cut paperboard tray with a debossed cradle is the mono-material alternative and increasingly what independent jewellers specify.
- Recycled-fibre microfibre linings are now available and look close to velvet at normal viewing distance, if you want the feel without a virgin synthetic.
- Water-based glue throughout keeps the shell in the paper recycling stream once the insert is removed.
- Jewellery boxes are kept, not discarded, more often than any other packaging format - designing the box to be reused as a storage box is the most honest sustainability move in this category.
