What Is a Drawer Sleeve Corrugated Box?
A drawer sleeve box is a two-part corrugated construction: an inner tray that slides out sideways, and an outer sleeve that holds it. Unlike a lift-off lid, the contents are revealed by pulling rather than lifting, which is a slower and more deliberate motion - and that is exactly why the format is used for gifting, premium subscription and product launches where the opening itself is meant to be an event.
Made in corrugated rather than rigid greyboard, the drawer sleeve becomes a genuinely shippable premium box. A rigid drawer box is beautiful but will not survive a courier network unprotected; an E-flute or B-flute drawer sleeve ships on its own, arrives intact and still gives the slide-out reveal. That combination is why it has largely replaced rigid drawer boxes in DTC.
The specification that decides whether it works is the sliding clearance. Too tight and the tray jams, especially in humid conditions where corrugated expands slightly. Too loose and the tray slides out in transit. The working tolerance is roughly 1-2mm on each side, and it has to be adjusted for the flute in use rather than copied from a rigid box dieline.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Drawer sleeve boxes are quoted by contents weight and by whether the box ships on its own or inside an outer.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Premium subscription boxes | E-flute with full-colour print on both the sleeve and the tray face, plus a die-cut insert so the reveal is staged. |
| Product launch and PR kits | B-flute with a foil-blocked sleeve and a printed tray interior. Ships direct to journalists and influencers with no outer carton. |
| Cosmetics and fragrance sets | E-flute with a die-cut paperboard or moulded pulp cradle holding each item, ribbon pull on the tray. |
| Consumer electronics and accessories | B-flute with a foam or paperboard cradle, drawer action giving a controlled reveal of a device. |
| Corporate gifting and onboarding kits | Larger format B-flute holding multiple items in compartments, sleeve printed with the recipient-facing message. |
| Confectionery and speciality food | E-flute with a food-grade liner or an inner pouch, drawer action suited to a multi-piece assortment. |
If the box ships on its own, say so. A drawer that is fine inside an outer carton needs a retention feature - a friction tab or a ribbon lock - once it goes into a courier network alone.
Material Specification
Corrugated gives a drawer box the one thing rigid greyboard cannot: it survives shipping unprotected.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| E-flute (1.5mm) | The retail-facing flute. Takes litho-laminated or direct-print artwork cleanly and keeps the box slim. |
| B-flute (3mm) | More crush resistance for heavier or bulkier contents while still printing acceptably. |
| EB double wall (4.5mm) | Used when the pack ships alone internationally or carries more than roughly 5kg. |
| Liner | White top kraft for full-colour print, or natural brown kraft for an unbleached recycled look. |
| Fluting medium | Recycled semi-chemical medium; the corrugated body is typically 70-100% recycled content. |
| Print method | Direct flexo for 1-3 spot colours, or litho-lamination when the artwork needs photographic CMYK. |
Sustainability notes
- Corrugated board is the most widely recycled packaging material in the world, with recovery rates above 80-90% in most developed markets.
- The fluting medium is typically 70-100% recycled fibre, and the liner can be specified as recycled kraft rather than bleached white.
- Water-activated paper tape and paper-based void fill keep the whole parcel in a single recycling stream - one plastic tape strip is enough to break that.
- Right-sizing the box removes both board and void fill, and usually lowers dimensional-weight freight cost at the same time.
- Direct flexo printing on natural kraft avoids the plastic film of a litho-laminated finish and is the lower-impact route when the artwork allows it.
Drawer, Sleeve and Insert Options
Sliding clearance, pull feature and insert are the three variables that decide whether the drawer action feels premium or cheap.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Sliding clearance | 1-2mm per side, adjusted for the flute. Copied straight from a rigid box dieline it will jam, because corrugated is thicker and moves more with humidity. |
| Pull feature | Ribbon pull, die-cut finger notch or a thumb slot in the sleeve. Ribbon reads as the most premium; the finger notch is the most durable. |
| Retention | A friction tab or a ribbon lock stops the tray sliding out in transit. Essential on any box that ships without an outer. |
| Print coverage | Sleeve outer, sleeve inner, tray outer and tray inner can each be printed separately. The tray interior is the surface the customer actually looks into. |
| Insert | Die-cut corrugated, paperboard or moulded pulp cradle. Paperboard and pulp keep the box mono-material and recyclable. |
| Flute | E-flute for the smoothest print and the slimmest wall, B-flute where the contents are heavy enough that a thin tray would bow. |
Do not skip the retention tab to save a few cents. A drawer that slides open inside a courier bag arrives with the contents loose in the outer, and that is the single most common complaint on this format.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.
Ordering: MOQ, Dieline and Lead Time
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| MOQ | 100 pcs per size and per design |
| Dieline | Free. We send a print-ready structural dieline to your designer before you commit to anything. |
| Pre-production sample | Plain structural sample in 3-5 days, printed sample in 5-7 days. Sample cost is credited against the bulk order. |
| Production lead time | 12-18 working days after artwork and sample sign-off |
| Artwork format | AI or PDF, CMYK, 300dpi, 3mm bleed, fonts outlined, placed on our dieline |
| Shipping | Ships flat-packed as sleeve and tray blanks, assembled in seconds without glue or tape. |
Send the heaviest item you intend to pack. Tray bowing under weight is what makes a drawer stick, and it is corrected with flute choice at dieline stage rather than with a heavier board later.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a drawer box and a lift-off lid box?
A drawer box opens sideways - an inner tray slides out of an outer sleeve. A lift-off lid opens vertically. The drawer motion is slower and more deliberate, which is why it is chosen for gifting and launch packaging where the opening is meant to feel like an event. It also holds the contents more securely in transit, because the tray is enclosed on five sides rather than resting under a lid.
Why corrugated instead of rigid greyboard?
Because it ships. A rigid greyboard drawer box looks superb and will arrive with crushed corners if it goes through a courier network without an outer carton. An E-flute or B-flute drawer sleeve gives you the same slide-out reveal in a structure that survives transit on its own, which removes an entire layer of packaging and its cost.
Will the drawer stick or fall out?
It depends on the clearance, which is roughly 1-2mm per side and has to be set for the actual flute. The common error is copying a rigid box dieline - corrugated is thicker and expands slightly in humidity, so a rigid clearance will jam. In the other direction, any box that ships without an outer needs a friction tab or ribbon lock, or the tray works its way open in a courier bag.
Can you print inside the drawer?
Yes, and it is the surface worth printing. Sleeve outer, sleeve inner, tray outer and tray inner are all separately printable. The tray interior is what the customer looks directly into as it slides open, so a printed tray interior does more for the unboxing than anything you can put on the outside.
Does it need an insert?
If more than one item is inside, yes. Without an insert the contents shift as the drawer slides, which is both audible and visible and undoes the premium feel. A die-cut corrugated or paperboard cradle keeps everything in position and keeps the pack mono-material, unlike a foam insert.
How does it ship to me?
Flat, as separate sleeve and tray blanks. Both assemble in seconds with no glue and no tape. Flat shipping is a significant freight saving on this format, because an assembled drawer box is mostly air.
What is the minimum order?
One hundred pieces per size and per design. Drawer sleeve boxes require two dielines, one for the sleeve and one for the tray, and both are free. Above roughly 1,000 pieces the unit price improves noticeably as the litho lamination runs more efficiently.
