What Is a Lipstick Packaging Box?
A lipstick carton is a small, tall folding carton engineered around one problem: a lipstick bullet is heavy for its size, has a high centre of gravity, and is almost always displayed standing up. Get the fitment wrong and the tube rattles, tips or punches through the end of the box in transit.
Standard lipstick tubes fall into a narrow band - roughly 20-26mm diameter and 70-90mm tall - so most cartons land between 25x25x85mm and 30x30x95mm. Those proportions are unforgiving. A tall narrow carton in light board will bow on a shelf, so 350gsm is the practical floor even though the product weighs very little.
Lip products are also the most heavily merchandised category in colour cosmetics. Shade names, PAO symbols, ingredient lists and batch codes all have to fit on a panel roughly the width of a finger, which is why the artwork layout is planned on the dieline before any design work starts.
Which Industries Use This Box, and How It Is Specified
Lip category packaging splits into several quite different builds.
| Industry / use case | How we normally spec it |
|---|---|
| Classic bullet lipstick | 350gsm SBS straight tuck end, 25-30mm square section, with a paperboard collar so the tube cannot tip inside the carton. |
| Liquid lipstick and gloss | Slightly wider section for the doe-foot applicator cap, plus a leak-tolerant fitment because the primary pack contains liquid. |
| Lip balm and lip care | Shorter carton, often kraft or recycled board, sold as a clean-beauty or apothecary format. |
| Lip kits and multi-shade sets | Compartmented paperboard tray inside a larger carton or a rigid box holding 3-6 units. |
| Refillable lipstick systems | Two cartons - one for the refillable case, a smaller economical carton for the refill bullet itself. |
| Sampling and PR | Miniature cartons at 100-500 pcs, printed digitally for influencer seeding and counter sampling. |
For a full colour range, ask for one dieline across all shades and change only the printed panel. It keeps the die cost to a single tooling charge and makes shade extensions trivial.
Material Specification
The board has to stand up on a shelf without bowing and reproduce shade colour accurately. Those two requirements set the specification.
| Component / stock | Specification |
|---|---|
| SBS / C1S board 300-400gsm | Virgin bleached board with a coated face. The default for colour cosmetics because it holds a true white and reproduces skin tones and shade swatches accurately. |
| FBB (GC1) 300-400gsm | Stiffer than SBS at the same weight, so it is often the cheaper way to reach the rigidity a tall narrow carton needs. |
| Metallised and pearlescent board | Silver or gold metallised polyester-laminated board, or pearlescent stock. Used for prestige lines, but it is not kerbside recyclable - a metallic ink or foil on plain board is the recyclable alternative. |
| Recycled CCNB / kraft | 80-100% recycled fibre for clean-beauty and refill lines where the visual story is honesty rather than gloss. |
| Inner fitment | Die-cut paperboard cavity, corrugated collar or moulded pulp cradle sized to the primary pack. Paperboard keeps the carton mono-material. |
| Coatings and inks | Soft-touch, matte or gloss laminate, or water-based aqueous varnish. Aqueous is the only finish that leaves the carton fully recyclable. Soy-based inks as standard. |
Sustainability notes
- Aqueous varnish instead of film lamination is the single biggest recyclability win on a cosmetic carton. Soft-touch film looks premium but adds a plastic layer the mill has to separate.
- A die-cut paperboard fitment replaces the EVA or PET tray that most cosmetic cartons still use, and keeps the whole pack in one material stream.
- Metallic effects can be achieved with metallic ink or a small foil area instead of a fully metallised board, which keeps the carton recyclable.
- Recycled CCNB and kraft stocks carry 80-100% recycled fibre and are increasingly what clean-beauty buyers specify.
- Right-sizing matters more than material: cutting 5mm of headspace off a carton across a full range removes more board than any stock switch.
Structure and Size Options
Everything here is drawn on the free dieline before artwork begins.
| Option | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Carton style | Straight tuck end for a clean front face, reverse tuck for lower unit cost, or a sleeve-and-tray build for prestige lines. |
| Fitment | Die-cut paperboard collar or a formed cavity. Essential on lipstick - without it the tube tips and dents the carton corners. |
| Finish | Soft-touch matte with spot UV or foil on the logo is the category standard. Aqueous varnish where recyclability is the priority. |
| Shade coding | Printed shade panel, foil shade tab, or a variable-data panel so one artwork covers the whole range. |
| Compliance panels | INCI ingredient list, PAO symbol, batch and expiry field, recycling mark. We lay these out on the dieline so nothing is cropped. |
| Window | Small die-cut aperture showing the shade end of the tube, patched with PET or cellulose film. |
The most common production issue on lipstick cartons is text set too close to a crease. Anything within 3mm of a fold line will distort when the carton is erected - the dieline marks that zone so your designer can avoid it.
Printing and Finishing
- Offset CMYK - photographic artwork, gradients and product imagery.
- Pantone spot colour - exact brand colour matching, up to 6 colours plus varnish.
- Digital printing - the reason we can hold MOQ at 100; no plate cost on short runs.
- Hot foil stamping - gold, silver, rose gold, holographic. The most requested logo finish.
- Emboss / deboss - raised or recessed logo, with or without foil.
- Spot UV - gloss varnish over a matte laminate to pick out a logo or pattern.
- Finishes - matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch lamination or aqueous varnish.

Packing Method For Corrugated Packaging:
Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size box do I need for a standard lipstick?
Most bullet lipsticks are 20-26mm in diameter and 70-90mm tall, which puts the carton between roughly 25x25x85mm and 30x30x95mm. Send us the actual tube or its exact dimensions and we will set the internal clearance - normally 1-1.5mm per side plus the fitment thickness.
Do I need an insert inside a lipstick box?
Yes, in almost every case. A lipstick has a high centre of gravity for its weight, so without a paperboard collar it tips over inside the carton, rattles on the shelf and dents the corners in transit. A simple die-cut collar solves it and keeps the pack all-paper.
What board weight should a lipstick carton be?
350gsm is the practical minimum despite the light contents. A tall narrow carton in 300gsm bows visibly when it stands on a shelf, which makes an expensive product look cheap. 400gsm is used for prestige lines where the extra stiffness is part of the hand-feel.
Can one dieline cover my whole shade range?
Yes, and it should. Use one structural dieline for all shades and change only the printed panel and shade name. You pay tooling once, shade extensions become a print change rather than a new development, and your warehouse holds one carton size.
Is soft-touch lamination recyclable?
Not readily. Soft-touch is a plastic film laminated to the board and has to be separated at the mill. If recyclability is a stated brand claim, use a matte aqueous varnish instead - it looks close, costs less, and the carton stays in the paper stream.
What is your MOQ for lipstick boxes and how fast can you deliver?
100 pcs per shade and per size, with 8-12 working days production after artwork and sample sign-off. The dieline is free and supplied before you order, so your designer can lay out the shade panel, INCI list and PAO symbol correctly the first time.
