What Is an Eyeshadow Palette Box?
An eyeshadow palette carton is a wide, flat, shallow box - proportions that behave nothing like the rest of a cosmetics range. A palette is broad enough to flex, heavy enough to sag in the middle, and contains pressed powder that cracks if the pack is dropped. The carton has to solve stiffness and shock at the same time.
Typical palettes run 100-180mm wide, 70-130mm deep and only 10-20mm high. At that width and that little depth, board stiffness across the span is the whole engineering problem: a 300gsm carton will visibly bow under a magnetic palette, and once it bows the lid no longer sits flat on a shelf.
The second issue is transit. Pressed powder pans crack from a single sharp drop, and a loose palette inside an oversized carton has enough travel to build up impact. Clearance is held tight, and for heavier magnetic palettes we add a paperboard or pulp cradle rather than relying on the carton walls.

Above roughly 250g of filled palette weight we normally recommend moving from a folding carton to a rigid lid and base box. It is not only about protection - a heavy product in a flexing carton reads as cheap.

Sustainability notes
- Aqueous varnish instead of film lamination is the single biggest recyclability win on a cosmetic carton. Soft-touch film looks premium but adds a plastic layer the mill has to separate.
- A die-cut paperboard fitment replaces the EVA or PET tray that most cosmetic cartons still use, and keeps the whole pack in one material stream.
- Metallic effects can be achieved with metallic ink or a small foil area instead of a fully metallised board, which keeps the carton recyclable.
- Recycled CCNB and kraft stocks carry 80-100% recycled fibre and are increasingly what clean-beauty buyers specify.
- Right-sizing matters more than material: cutting 5mm of headspace off a carton across a full range removes more board than any stock switch.

We test drop performance with the actual filled palette, not an equivalent weight. Pressed powder fails differently from a solid dummy, and the difference shows up as cracked pans on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions
What board weight do I need for an eyeshadow palette box?
400gsm is the working minimum for a folding carton. Palettes are wide and shallow, so stiffness across the span decides whether the box bows. At 300gsm a filled palette visibly sags the lid, which undermines a premium price point. Above roughly 250g filled weight we recommend a rigid greyboard build instead.
How do I stop the pressed powder cracking during shipping?
Two things: reduce travel and absorb shock. Hold internal clearance tight so the palette cannot build momentum inside the carton, and add a die-cut paperboard or moulded pulp cradle that holds it away from the walls. We drop-test with your actual filled palette because pressed powder fails differently from a solid dummy.
Should a palette box be rigid or a folding carton?
Filled weight decides it. Under about 250g, a 400gsm folding carton with a cradle performs well and costs far less. Above that, a folding carton starts to flex under the product and a rigid lid-and-base box on 1.5-2mm greyboard is the right call - both for protection and for how the pack reads at the price.
Can you add a window so customers see the shades?
Yes, and in this category it is worth it - shade is the purchase decision. We die-cut the aperture and patch it with PET or cellulose film. On rigid builds a window is also possible but the aperture has to be kept away from the wrapped corner or the wrap will lift.
What is the correct material for a rigid palette box?
1.5-2mm greyboard wrapped in 128-157gsm printed art paper. Folding boxboard is not a rigid material - it will crack rather than hold a rigid corner. If a supplier quotes you a rigid box in 350gsm paperboard, they are quoting a folding carton.
