What Is a Kraft Takeout Box with a Window?
A kraft takeout box with a window is a food-grade paperboard carton with a die-cut aperture and a clear film patch, so the customer can see the food without opening the pack. It has become the default format for salads, bakery items, pasta boxes, sandwich wedges and delivery meal boxes, for one commercial reason: a visible product converts better at a counter and generates fewer refund claims on a delivery app.
The engineering problem on this box is not the board, it is the interaction between grease, heat and the window film. Hot food raises the internal temperature and the humidity inside the box at the same time. PET film handles that. PLA film, the compostable option, starts to soften above roughly 45C. Choosing a compostable window for a hot meal box is the most common specification error in this category.
The second issue is the grease barrier. Fluorochemical (PFAS) treatments used to be the easy answer and are now banned or being phased out across the EU, California, New York and other US states. Every barrier we quote is PFAS-free: a water-based grease resistant coating for moderate grease, or a PE or PLA lining where the food is wet, hot or oily.

Window takeout boxes are quoted by what is inside them, because the food dictates barrier and film choice more than the brand does.

Material Specification
Board, barrier and window film are three separate decisions, and a compostable claim only holds if all three are compostable.

Sustainability notes
- PFAS-free is now the baseline, not a feature. Fluorochemical grease barriers are banned or being phased out across the EU, California, New York and several other US states, so any quote that still relies on them is a liability.
- A compostable claim only holds if every layer composts. A PLA-lined board with a PET window is not compostable, and it is the most common inconsistency we find on eco-branded food packaging.
- Unbleached kraft skips the bleaching stage entirely, which is a real reduction in water and chemical load, and it is also what buyers now read as the honest option.
- Printing on the outer face only, with no coating on the food-contact side, keeps the board simpler to recover and avoids any migration question.
- Right-sizing beats material switching: trimming a compartment box to the actual portion size removes more board across a season than changing stock does.

The window position changes the dieline, so it has to be settled before artwork rather than after.

Vent holes and window film pull in opposite directions: vents keep fried food crisp, a sealed window keeps it warm. For fried food, vents win - customers complain about soggy far more than about lukewarm.

Generally no need to put the PE bags inside of the cartons. Since the boxes are glued a layer of cardboard, generally production time is not long enough to dry the paper box. If you tie the PE bags, the steamed water pearl will be produced inside of the bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the window on a takeout box recyclable?
The board is; the film is a separate stream. A PET window has to be torn off before the board goes in the paper recycling, and most consumers will not do that, which is why a smaller window is a genuinely better environmental choice than a large one. If you need a single-stream claim, a PLA or cellulose window with a matching compostable board is the route - but then the whole pack has to go to a composting facility, not a kerbside bin.
Are your food boxes PFAS-free?
Yes, on every job. We do not use fluorochemical grease barriers at all. Grease resistance comes from a water-based coating for moderate grease, or a PE or PLA lining where the food is wet or hot. PFAS in food packaging is banned or being phased out across the EU, California, New York, Washington and other states, so any supplier still offering it is selling you a stranded specification.
Can a kraft takeout box with a window go in the microwave?
The board can. The window generally cannot. PET will distort and PLA will fail well before the food is hot. If reheating in the pack is part of the customer experience, the honest answer is to leave the window out and print a product photograph instead, or use a moulded pulp tray with a separate lid.
Will grease stain through the printing?
Not with the right barrier, and this is exactly what the barrier is for. Without one, oil wicks into the fibre and the print goes translucent and blotchy within about twenty minutes - the classic pizza-box look. A water-based barrier handles moderately greasy food; anything genuinely oily needs a PE or PLA lining.
Can you print on the inside of a food box?
On the non-contact areas, yes. We do not print on any surface that touches food directly. A common workaround is to print the inside of the lid, which the customer sees on opening but which never contacts the food. That gives you the brand moment without a migration question.
What is the minimum order for custom takeout boxes?
One hundred pieces per size and per design. That is intentionally low for this category, because independent cafes and single-site restaurants cannot absorb the 5,000-piece minimums most food packaging suppliers quote. Digital print at 100; offset becomes cheaper above about 3,000.
Do I need vent holes?
For fried food, yes. Steam with nowhere to go condenses on the board and the food goes soft inside ten minutes. For salads, bakery and cold items, no - vents just let the product dry out. It is a dieline decision and it costs nothing if it is decided before we cut.
